Every 4 years, researchers from across the globe who study hibernation gather during the International Hibernation Symposium (IHS). Since 1959, during this quadrennial event, they discuss how animals live in a seasonal world. With that, IHS2021 covers the ecology, ethology, evolution, physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology of hibernation. In this highly multidisciplinary setting, it also explores biomedical applications of hibernating mechanisms, e.g. in Medicine or space travel, and reaches out to related disciplines such as biological rhythms, sleep, thermoregulation and hypometabolism.
Hibernation research is on the rise once again, thanks to the advent of ‘omics’ techniques, a world facing global warming and the discovery of the marvels of hibernation by physicians. These topics will be addressed in special sessions. Additional highlights of IHS2021 encompass a preconference symposium for junior researchers, a PhD competition and an evening on the benefits of hibernation for space travel. And, of course, many oral and poster sessions where attendants share their latest results and ideas. As organising committee, we highly appreciate your input on the program, either by the contact form or twitter (@hibernation2021). You may also use these channels to pose any questions regarding IHS2021. We look forward to welcome you in Groningen in august 2021! The Organising Committee: Rob Henning Roelof Hut Hjalmar Bouma |
